Ways for Homeowners to put More Money in Their Pocket
With unemployment rates on the rise, families across the nation are seeking ways to reduce costs in their households. Electricity, heating and hot water are some of the biggest expenses that families face today. While these expenses are necessities, there are some very easy ways to reduce household usage in order to save families money on a monthly basis.
An obvious solution would be to reduce the amount of electricity used in the home. While this may seem difficult, especially for large families, it can be done without interrupting daily routines. First, lights and electronics should be off when not in use. Second, let the sun shine through the windows during the winter and block the sun in the summer. Third, adjust the air in the summer and the heat in the winter a few degrees. By adjusting the temperature two or three degrees, the household temperature should still be reasonably comfortable. Another option is a programmable thermostat, which will automatically adjust between air conditioning and heat and maintain a comfortable temperature year round in the home. Fourth, laundry should only be washed and dried when the load is full. When it is possible, hang the clothes to air dry. Fifth, fix or replace any leaky faucets because one drip a second can use as much as 20 kilowatts a month.
To begin with, families need to purchase and replace appliances with more energy efficient ones, such as ones manufactured by Energy-Star. These appliances are reported to reduce household energy usage by up to twenty percent monthly. When determining which applicants are most efficient, energy usage is usually available on the appliance label or can be found on the manufacturer's website. Another way to reduce household energy bills is by installing florescent light bulbs, which are most costly but use much less energy that traditional light bulbs. Lastly, homeowners should seal up leaks in the household where heating and air conditioning could escape. If a new home is being built or purchased, homebuyers should ensure that the home has thick insulation on the outside walls, as well as the top of the house. This will ensure that heating and air will stay inside the home, rather than escaping outside.
On the other hand, there are several techniques that homeowners do not consider but can cut energy costs. First, when landscaping, consider the trees around the home. The right mix of trees and scrubs can help block winter wind or summer sun. Second, choose light color roofing when replacing the roof on your home. Lighter colors deflect the sun; whereas, darker colors will reflect the sun. Third, contact your power company and ask about energy saving programs or rebates for purchasing energy efficient appliances. Fourth, practice preventable maintenance in your home, which means to take good care of your house by having terminate inspections, changing air filters, and having the air conditioning unit serviced.
These are several tips that homeowners can take into consideration when trying to reduce home expenses. At first, these may seem to be drastic changes, but they are simple to follow and are guaranteed ways to reduce home expenses. While all homeowners may not be able to financially afford newer, modern, energy-efficient appliances, they are still able to reduce home costs by following some of the other options. Regardless of whether the savings are significantly less or not, they will add up over time.
