Summer Jobs For Kids And The Positive Benefits They Create
Summer jobs for kids is full of benefits and rewards for everyone involved. In fact in ideal scenarios it is a win-win situation benefiting the child, the parent, and the employee. The child is the true winner through the experience they gain, the self esteem they can achieve, and the knowledge they are capable of earning money of their own. It can also be a huge incentive to learn to manage their money and to start saving for something in particular and teaching them how to set goals. There are many different types of jobs out there for young teens and even tweens (preteens) but with many more limitations. State and federal laws have specific rules and regulations for employing teenagers and will vary from state to state.
This does not mean that parents or relatives cannot pay their children for extra work done or that they cannot hire them for tasks and projects that are within their ability to accomplish. This again is a very healthy incentive as long as the work the kids are doing is over and above their everyday chores. The purpose for children learning to do daily chores is to teach and instill the sense of necessary discipline to do the tasks that must be done efficiently and in a scheduled and timely manner. The purpose of children accepting a summer job is the best way to teach and reinforce responsibility and how rewarding it can be to do a job and to be proud of your work and be rewarded with the money you have just earned. With guidance the child or teenager can be encouraged to save a percentage of their earnings for either something they are saving for or for another thought-out reason.
One of the important issues here would be for the child to be encouraged to think it out thoroughly and having the chance to realize if they make a plan and stick to it that they can succeed and reward themselves. Being there to encourage the child to start establishing good and positive spending habits and to respect themselves by respecting their earnings can be of utmost importance depending on the individual child, their personality, maturity level and their actual age.
When it comes to the actual summer job for kids the child's age will be of major importance. If they are not old enough to legally work a tax-paying job you will want to consider age-appropriate projects or tasks that will both be a learning experience and something they will need to know anyway in their own future. Not all tasks may fall into this category but with children between 11 and 14 years old you will want to be careful not to allow them to do a job that could possibly scare them from working and would be a negative experience. Eventually they will more than likely have to work a job that they don't like, but at that young age avoiding an inevitably negative experience as their introduction to the work force can produce some very devastating results.
Good summer jobs for kids can be yard work, gardening projects, washing cars, and assorted cleaning jobs. They can also do things like walk the dog and do special things for the elderly such as read to them. A 12-year-old could be given the job of assisting and tutoring a 7-year-old that is having trouble with certain subjects. As long as they benefit the child in a positive and healthy way, summer jobs structured for children is a great way to encourage both responsibility and confidence in themselves.
